There is nothing like a dream to create the future.
Victor Hugo
How do we go from nothing to something? As a design student we learn to first start with a design concept. The design concept for Ralph Laurens fall/winter 2011/2012 collection could be Modern Chinoiserie Glamour. Like an old movie set in the 1940 with an Art Deco twist. Lets say dinner and dancing aboard the SS Normandie, who really cares about the story line, we just care about how fabulous our favorite movie star looks.
What is Chinoiserie? Well for those who really care, it’s a style that first developed in the mid to late 17th century. Yes it’s not new! Many great things aren’t.
What is Art Deco? Well it’s a style that developed in Paris in the 1920’s. Once again not new!
At a time when everything seems so casual and un-glamours, how could one imagine such a vision. Where would we go, who would we be and the big question is what will the modern guy be waring to accompany a woman dressed like this?
Fashion could be an opportunity to step outside ourselves and step into our movie of opportunity where we could be the STAR!
